3rd Grade Data Analysis Graphing Using Microsoft Forms, Excel, and Office Mix

3rd Grade Data Analysis Graphing Using

Microsoft Forms, Excel, and Office Mix

Excel is one of those tricky programs that is VERY amazing and useful, but as a teacher may not see the need to teach it to younger students. Well, I took the risk and introduced Excel to 3rd graders, and they LOVED the program! Even if you are not very Excel savvy, I have included Office Mix videos that can walk you and your students through it! Have fun!

In this unit, we created surveys using Microsoft Forms, Excel to construct bar graphs, line plots, and picture graphs, and Office Mix to analyze the data.

Summary

This unit focuses on an important standard, data collection. Students think of a question to survey peers. Students create the survey using Microsoft Forms. Students will construct line plots, picture graphs, and bar graphs representing data collected in survey. Students will insert graphs from Microsoft Excel into Microsoft Powerpoint and create an Office Mix analyzing results.

Pre-class set up:

  • Mini-Lesson on Microsoft Forms
  • Directions on constructing graphs/charts via Excel and Word (videos in lesson)
  • Mini-Lesson on Office Mix

Class time activities

  • This unit spreads out for a few days.
  • Students think of a question along with choices to survey peers (example: What is your favorite ice cream? Chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, chocolate chip, or coffee). Teachers can have students write the question and choices or type directly into Microsoft Forms.
  • Students create the survey using Microsoft Forms.
  • Students share Forms link via collaboration space in OneNote (this avoids the use of emailing peers).
    • Students share link with table groups first (the first time the survey is taken needs to be a smaller group of students (12 or less) –
      • I created tabs within the OneNote Notebook labeled Group 1 and Group 2. Students copy and pasted links to correct tabs and only took surveys within the correct tab.
      • Students check survey results within Microsoft Forms and record results in OneNote Notebooks or on a scratch piece of paper
      • Students create a line plot in Microsoft Excel following this instructional video: https://mix.office.com/watch/sr4s2ze6lhyx
      • Since the Excel graphs will be created via Office 365, they will be saved and accessed later when it is time to create the Office Mix.
    • Students share link with entire class and students spend time clicking on student links and taking the surveys.
      • Students in group 2 went to the Group 1 tab and took surveys, while students in Group 1 went to the Group 2 tab.
      • Students check survey results again within Microsoft Forms and record results in OneNote Notebooks or on a scratch piece of paper.
      • Students create a pictograph (using a scale of 1 and a scale of 2) in Microsoft Excel following this instructional video: https://mix.office.com/watch/1j8g5v5ebex7j
      • Since the Excel graphs will be created via Office 365, they will be saved and accessed later when it is time to create the Office Mix.
    • Students share link with other 3rd grade classes.
      • Students traveled to other classrooms in groups of 4 and surveyed individuals. My students took an iPad or laptop and clicked on the link each time he/she approached a student
      • Students check survey results again within Microsoft Forms and record results in OneNote Notebooks or on a scratch piece of paper.
      • Students create a bar graph (scale is already set) in Microsoft Excel following this instructional video: https://mix.office.com/watch/15e4zfktnvp64
      • Since the Excel graphs will be created via Office 365, they will be saved and accessed later when it is time to create the Office Mix.
  • Once graphs have been created, students insert graphs into Microsoft Powerpoint and begin working on scripts that analyze results. Students record Office Mix analyzing the findings from their survey.
  • Office Mix presentations will be uploaded to Docs.com so peers/parents can view presentations and make comments.
